Jim & Roxanne Gain

Jim and Roxanne are two “Foodie Soulmates” from opposite sides of the food spectrum. Jim loves the savoury, salty and spicy side while Roxanne’s passion lies with the sweet and sugary.

Whether they are experimenting with new flavours, or finally finding perfection in that old recipe they’ve made a thousand times, the pride in their work is evident. Their kitchen is filled with joy, infectious laughter, and two hearts that are overflowing with gratitude at how far their little dream has taken them.

When they first met, many years ago in Thunder Bay, Ontario, they had no idea what was in store for them. While studying Radio & Television Broadcasting, Jim quickly found that he loved the business and marketing elements, especially photography and other mixed media. Roxanne had just moved to Jim’s hometown and was working as a waitress.

From the moment they met, they fell head-over-heels in love and Jim asked Roxanne to marry him after just two weeks! They moved back and forth across Canada a few times before finally settling in Nanaimo where they have raised their family for 30+ years.

The Gain Foods company was founded in 2000. What began as a small side hustle selling to family and friends quickly grew into something much more. By 2003 Jim was putting his business and marketing tools to work as they began to supply local cafes and restaurants with their fresh wholesale baking. Word spread quickly regarding their high-quality products and services which led to catering contracts for local parties, special events, office luncheons, BBQ’s and more.

Today, Gain Foods supplies their freshly made products to many businesses and local customers across the Nanaimo area. Although the Covid pandemic affected them like everyone else in the food business – they realized it was time to invest in new equipment and processes including the highly requested addition of an upgraded website for online ordering.

Gain Foods is one of those unique and special businesses that when the owners retire there is almost a collective sadness or grief that something they loved is no longer there. Thankfully, Jim and Roxanne don’t believe in retirement! It may be their old family ethic kicking in or just a testimony to how much they love their work, but it appears that Jim and Roxanne will continue working at Gain Foods until the last oven timer has “tolled” their final story.
